Rural Vermont has been working with farmer leaders to codify, and since then, expand and improve raw milk regulation since the early 2000s. Most recent changes to the law occurred in spring 2021, making it legal for tier two producers to sell raw milk at other farms’ farmstands and CSAs in Vermont. This seemingly small change brings significant equity in market access for raw producers, and makes this farm fresh product much easier to access for consumers.
We see raw milk production as an essential part of a community scale food web, and continue to work with a farmer leader Milk Group to identify obstacles and barriers and work towards scale-appropriate regulations that support our food sovereignty. We have made significant progress expanding economic opportunity for producers and access to consumers, and much work remains to be done. If you are a current or aspiring raw milk producer (or raw milk enthusiast) and want to get involved, contact mollie@ruralvermont.org.
