Farm Fresh Meat - NAIS

Farm Fresh Meat

Farm Fresh Meat is meat that is produced from animals grown the way nature intended, processed on the farm, and sold to local customers. Many regulations put barriers between farmers and consumers, forcing both to enter the industrialized food system to sell or buy meat. Rural Vermont recently worked to break down one of these barriers. In 2007, the “Chicken Bill” was enacted into law in Vermont. It allows small-scale poultry producers to process their birds on the farm (without state or federal inspection) and sell these birds at farmers’ markets or to local restaurants. We are currently working with farmers and consumers who would like to break down more barriers for other meat products.

National Animal Identification System (NAIS)

What is Animal ID?

Animal ID (sometimes referred to as "NAIS" or National Animal Identification System)is a federal plan to ear-tag and track the movements of every domestic livestock animal in the United States by 2009. The State of Vermont has proposed implementing Phase 1 of this plan (called Premises ID) in 2006. This program is currently NOT mandatory, but the state and federal plan is for mandatory registration by 2008.

Five reasons YOU should be concerned about Animal ID

Animal ID:
1) will not stop the spread of Avian Flu and other animal diseases.
2) threatens small family farmers and thriving local food markets.
3) was created by the agribusiness industry and will be costly and ineffective.
4) is an invasion of personal privacy.
5) will make it more difficult for you to buy and sell farm fresh products.
